Periodontal Treatment

Most Americans suffer from gum disease, or periodontal disease, at one point in their lives. This condition occurs when gum tissue becomes swollen, inflamed, or infected.

This is a severe condition that can affect your tissues and jaw bone. Without treatment, it can easily contribute to tooth loss. At Wamego Dental Center, we work hard to identify and treat periodontal disease so that our patients can enjoy their smiles for a long time!

What Does Gum Disease Look Like?

Gum disease is very silent and sneaky; many patients don't even know they have it. While it is mostly asymptotic, there are some symptoms that patients should look out for, including:

  • Tender and swollen gums
  • Gums that bleed
  • Irritated or sore gums
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth

Why Healthy Gums Are So Important

Like a new house, a healthy smile is only as good as its foundation. When your gums are infected or unhealthy, they can affect other systems in your body. Studies suggest that your gums are connected to many parts of your body, which means diseased gums can affect your general well-being. These correlations include respiratory disorders, heart disease, strokes, obesity, diabetes, and more.

Fortunately, we can manage most stages of gum disease, especially if we catch it early. Preventive measures go along way to keeping your mouth clean and healthy, and we highly recommend that patients do not skip their dental check-ups with us.

Gum disease is an infection that impacts your gums and makes them inflamed and tender. During these beginning stages, gum disease can be easily reversed. These are one of the conditions we screen for when we see patients.

When gum disease is untreated, it develops into periodontitis. Gums often form loose pockets around teeth that are very attractive to harmful bacteria and food particles. If we don't clean these pockets, they can become infected and eventually eat away at your jaw bone and lead to tooth loss.
